Some things to consider when thinking of having a portrait produced.

Clothing

Keep it simple, while new trends look good today, they can be out of fashion very quickly and will date a portrait. Keeping it simple with black and white or denim clothing (as they are always in fashion) will help create that timeless image. Avoid strong vivid colours and large bold patterns as these will distract from the sitter.

In groups try not to mix light and dark clothing.

Neckline, if you have a fuller face or shorter neck then a v neck or lower cut top is more flattering, likewise if you have a slender face or longer neck then a turtle-neck or higher cut top/shirt would be better

Childern

When bringing your child / children to have a portrait taken try to stay relaxed, if you are relaxed then they are more likely to stay relaxed.

Please do not tell your child / children to “be good” warning them before hand will only put them under pressure and can stop their personality from shining through, likewise during the shot please do not ask your child / children to smile again this may put them under pressure or result in that funny expression you do not like.

Do bring a favourite toy if will help younger children relax.

Dress children as you like to see them, but clothes should fit, that outfit they have almost grown into or is just a little tight can look very off putting in the final results.

Younger children and babies look best in pale / pastel colours and bare feet, but again clothes should be a good fit.

I hope this is useful.
